What it is used for
The vehicle count on a licence is the only public measure of a carrier fleet size. When vetting a subcontractor it tells you more than turnover does.
A company can hold a domestic transport permit and an EU licence at the same time. We return both records, because they authorise different kinds of carriage.
Frequently asked questions
Why does a company have several records?
A transport permit and an EU licence are separate authorisations with their own number, validity and vehicle count. Merging them into one record would lose what the carrier is actually authorised to do.
Do you hold every carrier, or only the companies somebody asked about?
Every one. The register is crawled in full once a week, so a carrier is in the data even if nobody has looked it up yet.
